Reason one to cherish the memory of Subway Sect: their singer Vic Godard hated rock and roll. Subway Sect promoted the idea of weakness, not strength, at a time when rock music was still congratulating itself for the macho swagger of the early punks. Their music was shot through with intelligence and, more importantly, love for melody that took me years to understand or fully relate to. It took me a while to forgive them for not being the Buzzcocks.
